The Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis is accepting applications for a full-time senior staff member with experience in national and international security affairs, with an Asia-Pacific focus, to be based in its Cambridge, Massachusetts, office. Primary responsibilities include research and project management, planning and executing subject-related workshops, seminars, and conferences, assisting in and occasionally leading proposal development, developing policy briefings, drafting conference summary reports, and preparing original papers and monographs on a range of Asia-related foreign and defense policy issues. Secondary responsibilities include support for IFPA principals’ work on government contracts. Applicants must possess superior research, organizational, writing, and analytic skills. They must also be U.S. citizens and either hold a current security clearance or be eligible to apply for one.
Applicants should have at least an MA in international affairs, or the equivalent, with a strong background in security and Asian studies. Congressional, military, or other governmental experience (such as with DoD or State) is desirable, but not required. Foreign language skills (Japanese, Korean, or Chinese) and experience with proposal writing for foundation grants and government contracts are also advantageous. Understanding of, and interest, in the military operational and strategic policy aspects of defense planning is essential. Regional knowledge in East Asia is important, particularly Japan, Korea, or China. Main areas of current work include U.S. alliance relations in East Asia and regional security cooperation, North-South Korean relations and North Korean denuclearization efforts, counter-proliferation, and Japanese foreign policy. Applicants must be capable of learning new issue areas quickly and be able to work with a minimum of supervision to tight deadlines as part of a small team.
