Letter from Condoleeza Rice

THE SECRETARY OF STATE
WASHINGTON
September 29, 2005

Dear Dr. Pfaltzgraff

Thank you for your willingness to serve on the Arms Control and Nonproliferation Advisory Board. Earlier this year I reconstituted the board as a complement to the broader efforts of transformational diplomacy underway at the Department of State.

The board will consist of individuals with diverse leadership experiences in government, business, and the scientific and academic communities. All of its members have outstanding expertise in the areas of international security, nonproliferation, and arms control. The board’s mission is to provide me and other senior Department officials with insight and advice on vital national security challenges, including issues such as WMD terrorism and counterproliferation.

I recognize that your service on this board will be a significant commitment of your time. I also know that your work and recommendations will have a direct influence on the future direction of U.S. security policy.

A Department representative will be in contact with you shortly to both confirm your commitment to serve and ensure the necessary clearances are attained. If you have any questions in the interim, please do not hesitate to contact directly the board’s sponsor. Under Secretary Robert Joseph, or Acting Executive Director Matthew Zartman at (202) 647-0440 or zartmanml@state.gov.

          Sincerely,

Dr. Robert Pfaltzgraff,
