As part of an ongoing project, IFPA convened a workshop on March 14, 2005, in Washington, D.C., that brought together U.S. and Canadian officials and nongovernment experts to address border security, maritime issues, port security, and the protection of critical infrastructure as well as organizational requirements for enhancing U.S.-Canada security cooperation. The workshop also included participants from Congress, the private sector, and media. The one-day meeting was cosponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., with the support of the Richard Lounsbery Foundation.
U.S. and Canadian speakers provided an overview of homeland security/defense organizations and programs as well as a critical review of their successes together with areas that need additional attention, highlighting lessons learned. The meeting helped to shed light on promising options to enhance the homeland security of Canada and the United States.
