U.S.-ROK Workshop in Seoul, Korea

In support of General John Tilelli, USA, Commander, U.S. Forces Korea, Brig. General Daniel L. Montgomery, USA, PEO Air and Missile Defense, and the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO), IFPA-affiliate NSPA planned, organized, and convened a workshop entitled Theater Missile Defense in Northeast Asia: Implications for Korean Security and the ROK-U.S. Alliance. Held in Seoul, Korea, on June 14,1999, the meeting addressed a variety of air and missile planning and operational issues as well as the prospects for increased theater missile defense (TMD) cooperation with the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Senior level military and civilian officials from both the United States and the Republic of Korea participated. In addition to General Tilelli and Brig. General Montgomery, other U.S. participants encompassed senior level officials from the Services, BMDO, and civilian experts from the U.S. policy and technical missile defense community.

Participants from the ROK included senior representatives from the Ministry of National Defense, the Joint Staff, the individual Service Staffs, the Agency for Development, the security policy department of the Foreign Ministry, and the office of the National Security Advisor to the Blue House.

A workshop summary based on the meeting was produced.
