Security Dynamics in Southeastern Europe

IFPA and the Kokkalis Foundation are collaborating on a project to examine the principal strategic-military challenges in this uncertain and evolving region and to assess their implications for the bilateral U.S.-Greek relationship and broader Alliance relations. Recent work on this project includes the following:

The third volume in the IFPA-Kokkalis Series on Southeast European Policy, this major study, entitled Defense Modernization and Military Cooperation in Southeastern Europe, was written to help the governments of Southeatern Europe speed the military modernization process as they seek to strengthen their links with Euro-Atlantic institutions and especially with NATO. As the United States and its allies increasingly turn their focus to the global war on terrorism and the stanching of WMD proliferation, strategic interest has risen significantly in those parts of the so-called new Europe that are close to areas of potential terroist and prolferation activities (sucah as Central Asia and the Middle East). This in turn highlights the importance of new and potential NATO members in Southeastern Europe.
New Approaches to Balkan Studies. The thirteen papers included in this volume - the second in the IFPA-Kokkalis Series on Southeast European Policy - were presented at workshops between 1999 and 2001 held by the Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. They cover a broad range of topics and cross many academic disciplines and historical periods, each taking an innovative approach to its subject and following a less-traveled path to the study of the Balkans region.
A major research effort on Greek-Turkish relations after the Cold War, culminating in this first volume in the IFPA-Kokkalis Series on Southeast European Policy, a monograph entitled Greek-Turkish Relations in the Era of Globalization.. The study explores Greek-Turkish relations since 1989 and how they have been affected by recent systemic, regional, and local changes. Its focus is the interaction between domestic and international politics, as well as a detailed analysis of relations between Greece and Turkey in the 1990s and their prospects for the coming years.
A major conference, NATO and Southeastern Europe: Security Issues for the Early 21st Century, in April 1999, coinciding with the NATO fiftieth anniversary summit held in Washington, D.C. IFPA hosted this conference together with the Kokkalis Foundation of Athens, Greece; the North Atlantic Alliance was a co-sponsor. IFPA published a conference report for the event in October of 1999 and a monograph of the same title, including selected presentations from the conference, in April of 2000.
