In 1994 IFPA organized the WMD Curricular Working Group to explore post-Cold War instructional approaches in professional military educational institutions, particularly with regard to the security ramifications of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) proliferation and deterrence. The working group now consists of more than eighty faculty members and other experts in a variety of WMD-related fields.
In a series of meetings held since 1994, WMD and deterrence issues have been identified and discussed. The results of these meetings have included a series of curricular materials on WMD and deterrence topics for integration into core and elective offerings in professional military education. A major theme has been to maintain necessary nuclear political and military expertise as well as scientific and technical expertise well into the twenty-first century. At the most recent meeting, in June 1999, participants discussed, among other topics, recent advances in missile defense, counterproliferation techniques, and nuclear technology.
