U.S. Thinking Strategic Changes; Confronting Old Realities

This issue of Security Issues in the Middle East analyzes events over the last quarter, including the new U.S. administration's efforts to craft a new defense strategy that may have profound implications for U.S. commitments to the region. The quarterly report also covers the ongoing battles between Israel and the Palestinians and notes how the United States is getting pulled back in as a peacemaker despite the Bush administration's desires. In addition, the report analyzes the UK-U.S. attempt to impose new "smart sanctions" on Iraq, and Saddam's attempts to get out from under any international restrictions. It also looks at how and why the Saudi government is becoming more vocal on the Palestinian issue and how this relates to Riyadh's broader regional strategy. Finally, the run-up to Iran's June elections is examined as well as the chances for improved U.S.-Iranian relations in the short term.
